Ulnar Collateral Ligament Injury of the Thumb

Thumb Injuries

A 32-year-old woman presents after a skiing accident where her thumb was forcibly abducted when she fell on an outstretched hand gripping a ski pole. She has pain and swelling over the ulnar aspect of the thumb MCP joint. Examination reveals tenderness at the ulnar collateral ligament, and stress testing shows 40 degrees of valgus laxity at the MCP joint compared to 10 degrees on the uninjured side, with no firm endpoint.
