A 42-year-old man presents after feeling a sudden "pop" in his calf while playing recreational basketball. He describes a sensation of being kicked from behind but no one touched him. Examination reveals a palpable gap in the Achilles tendon 4cm above the calcaneal insertion, weakness of plantarflexion, and absence of plantarflexion when the calf is squeezed.
