Intertrochanteric Fractures

Hip Fractures

A 78-year-old woman falls at home and presents with right hip pain. She cannot bear weight. Examination reveals the leg shortened and externally rotated. X-ray shows an intertrochanteric fracture with comminution of the posteromedial cortex (calcar) and a fracture line extending into the lateral cortex below the greater trochanter.
