đWhat is Golfer's Elbow (Medial Epicondylitis)?
Golfer's elbow causes pain on the inner elbow from overuse. Learn about physiotherapy, injections, when to check for nerve problems, and treatment options.
đŦWhat Causes It?
- Repetitive wrist flexion (bending wrist forward)
- Repetitive forearm pronation (turning palm down)
- Poor throwing mechanics (baseball pitching)
- Golf swing with poor technique or excessive practice
- Degeneration of wrist flexor tendons (flexor-pronator mass)
- Overuse in manual labor (typing, assembly work, carpentry)
â ī¸Risk Factors
âšī¸
You may be at higher risk if:
- Age 35-55 years
- Golf (but only 10-20% of golfer's elbow occurs in golfers)
- Racquet sports, baseball (pitching)
- Occupations with repetitive wrist flexion (typing, assembly, manual labor)
- Poor technique in sport (golf swing, throwing)
- Sudden increase in activity
- Ulnar nerve instability (predisposes to nerve symptoms)
đĄī¸Prevention
- âUse proper technique in golf (get lessons to improve swing)
- âProper throwing mechanics (baseball pitching - avoid overuse)
- âErgonomic workstation (keyboard position, take breaks)
- âStrengthen forearm muscles preventively (wrist flexor exercises)
- âWarm up before sport
- âGradual progression in activity (don't suddenly increase golf/throwing volume)
- âUse appropriate equipment (correct golf club grip size)
- âAvoid leaning on elbows (prevents ulnar nerve irritation)
