đWhat is Elbow Arthritis (Worn Elbow Joint)?
Elbow arthritis causes pain and stiffness from worn cartilage. Learn about post-traumatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, treatment options, cortisone injections, and when elbow replacement might help.
đŦWhat Causes It?
- Previous elbow fracture (distal humerus, radial head, olecranon) - most common cause of elbow arthritis
- Previous elbow dislocation
- Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD lesion) in young athletes - leads to early arthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory arthropathy
- Overuse in manual laborers, athletes (baseball pitchers, gymnasts)
- Rare: primary osteoarthritis (wear and tear without injury - less common in elbow than hip/knee)
â ī¸Risk Factors
You may be at higher risk if:
- Previous elbow fracture or dislocation (80% of elbow arthritis is post-traumatic)
- Heavy manual labor or repetitive elbow loading
- Throwing sports (baseball pitching)
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Male gender (more common than females for post-traumatic arthritis)
- Age over 50
- Obesity (less strong association than knee/hip arthritis)
đĄī¸Prevention
- âSeek treatment for elbow fractures/dislocations promptly (reduces post-traumatic arthritis risk)
- âAvoid repetitive heavy elbow loading if possible
- âUse ergonomic tools and equipment for work
- âManage rheumatoid arthritis with appropriate medications
- âMaintain healthy weight (less important for elbow than hip/knee but still helpful)
- âDon't ignore persistent elbow pain - early treatment may slow progression
