- Rheumatoid arthritis weakening the finger ligaments and tendons
- Untreated mallet finger (injury to the fingertip tendon)
- Loose or stretched ligaments at the base of the finger (volar plate laxity)
- Cerebral palsy or stroke causing muscle imbalance
- Ehlers-Danlos syndrome or other connective tissue disorders
- Direct injury causing damage to the volar plate ligament
