The Lenke Classification of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis

Authors
Lenke LG, Betz RR, Harms J, et al
Journal
J Bone Joint Surg Am
Year
2001

Key Findings

  • 1

Curve type (1-6) based on structural criteria on bending films

  • 2

Lumbar modifier (A, B, C) based on CSVL position

  • 3

Thoracic sagittal modifier (-, N, +) based on T5-T12 kyphosis

  • 4

Guides surgical planning and fusion levels

  • 5

Replaced King classification with better reliability

Clinical Implications

The Lenke classification provides a systematic approach to AIS that guides surgical planning, including determination of fusion levels and approach selection.

Teaching Note

Must understand Lenke classification for scoliosis viva. Curve types 1-6, lumbar modifier A/B/C, sagittal modifier -/N/+. Key concept: structural vs non-structural curves on bending films. Type 1 curves most common. Know indications for anterior release.
