Evidence brief
Chondrosarcoma: Surgical Treatment
Histological grading (I, II, III) predicts behavior
Grade I: 10-year survival 90%+
Grade III: 10-year survival 30-40%
Surgery is mainstay - chemo/radiation resistant
Wide surgical margin essential
Chondrosarcoma treatment is primarily surgical as it is resistant to chemotherapy and radiation. Grading determines prognosis and extent of surgery.
Key teaching: chondrosarcoma is resistant to chemo/radiation - surgery only treatment. Grading critical: I (ACT-1 or Grade I) may be curettage, II/III need wide excision. Distinguish from enchondroma (difficult!). Common locations: pelvis, proximal femur. Dedifferentiated worst prognosis.
