FAITH:FAITH Trial

Fracture Fixation in the Operative Management of Hip Fractures (FAITH)

Authors
FAITH Investigators
Journal
Lancet
Year
2017
Sample
n=1,108
Follow-up
24 months

Key Findings

  • 1

No significant difference between sliding hip screw and cancellous screws for femoral neck fractures

  • 2

Revision surgery rates: 8.5% (SHS) vs 10.6% (cancellous screws)

  • 3

1,108 patients randomized across 81 centers in 8 countries

  • 4

Low-energy femoral neck fractures in patients ≥50 years

  • 5

    24-month follow-up

Clinical Implications

The FAITH trial demonstrated clinical equipoise between sliding hip screw and cancellous screws for femoral neck fracture fixation. The choice can be based on surgeon preference, implant availability, and patient factors rather than superiority of one method.

Teaching Note

When asked about femoral neck fracture fixation: 'Both SHS and cancellous screws are acceptable based on FAITH trial - no significant difference in revision rates.' Know the patient population (low-energy, ≥50 years) and sample size (1,108 patients).
